In the beginning, when the world was young, the goddess Nüwa (女娲) walked the earth alone. Feeling lonely, she knelt by the Yellow River and began to shape figures from the yellow clay. When she breathed life into them, humanity was born.
But the world was not yet complete. When the pillar of heaven collapsed and the sky cracked open, floods and fires ravaged the land. Nüwa gathered five colored stones—representing the Five Elements—and melted them to repair the broken sky.
